CBD and Cardiovascular Health

Strokes and heart disease are both serious health issues that collectively kill about 760,000 people a year in the United States alone. Preventative care can go a long way to reducing that number, but it can’t eliminate the threat completely. Doctors and researchers have looked at CBD oil in a number of different animal trials, and what they’ve found is may be helpful for those who are interested in supporting and maintaining healthy cardiovascular function. Find out more about how cannabis reacts with the body in some of the most extreme situations a body can face.

CBD Oil and Stroke Research

Strokes occur when either the blood is clotted and can’t reach the brain, or when a blood vessel abruptly ruptures. in either case, it is that lack of perfusion to the brain and the subsequent loss of oxygenation that causes lasting damage. When a person has a stroke, the primary concern is stopping the damage as quickly as possible. Many people can live for decades after they’ve had a stroke, but if too much oxygen is lost, the quality of life leaves much to be desired. They may suffer a number of ailments, including memory loss and motor or verbal impairments. Scientists have tested a number of different methods to find out how to limit brain cell death when time is of the essence, and they may have found encouraging help in some forms of cannabis.

Research conducted into cannibidiol (CBD) suggests that pharmaceutical versions of the compound can potentially help increase antioxidant effects, which can be beneficial in instances where oxygen can’t reach the brain. So far, tests have been administered by the National Institutes for Mental Health (NIMH) on rats using both THC and CBD, with scientists noting that they preferred CBD because of its non-psychoactive nature. While ongoing research continues, non-pharmaceutical cannibidiol products may be helpful in promoting healthy circulation and helping improve the beneficial effects of natural antioxidents in the body that support normal cell activity even in circumstances that are not ideal.

CBD Oil and Heart Attack Research

Research into the effects of pharmaceutical CBD oil and cardiac dysfunction is also being conducted with similar initial findings as those studies that look into cannibidiol and strokes. According to an abstract published by the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, researchers found that animals induced with pharmaceutical CBD tended to demonstration less inflammation, smaller sizes of tissue damage in the heart and less stress on the circulatory system that those who were not induced with CBD. The abstract also suggests cannibidiol may play a role in vascular stress and the body's reaction to long-term sugar intake. While it is important to note that the results discussed were noted primarily in animal testing, it is encouraging to see that the trend toward identifying the helpful effects of cannibis is ongoing. The implications seem to suggest that positive health effects can be elicited from the natural hemp derivative cannibidiol.

Those familiar with CBD oil may be understandably skeptical about its effects on cardiovascular health, and it is wise to fully evaluate any supplement or claim before use. Some reports note that CBD can increase the heart rate of the user after taking it (similar to caffeine). This may make people think that irregular cardiovascular effects can be higher if they use cannabis. However, another study noted that circulatory functioning may be improved with pharmaceutical CBD, though it is important to note the extremely small sample size in the pharmaceutical CBD study. Ultimately, it is important to balance any potential risks of the naturally occuring phytocannibinoid CBD, including changes in heart rate,  with any potential benefits, including the potential to help promote and improve relaxation, which can have a beneficial impact on overall well being.

It’s clear that the scientific community and pharmaceutical industry have a vested interest in determining the impact CBD may have on several of the most common health concerns Americans face today. While over the counter CBD research is yet to catch up with that of big pharma, many health conscious consumers are looking into the role that CBD may play in helping to improve relaxation and provide relief from stress, which can be supportive when it comes to maintaining healthy cells, tissues and muscles across the lifespan. While heart and blood health is dependent on a number of factors (e.g., diet, exercise, stress, etc.) CBD may offer a natural way to to reduce effects of aging, tension and lifestyle habits that can have significant effects the human body.
